Gentrification In Harlem

Week 1: Rezoning Harlem

1.From what you can interpret from the documentary, why do the NYC Planning Commission want to rezone 125th street?

From the documentary I can interpret that the NYC Planning Commission wants to rezone 125th street because they believe that the small business in the community bring nothing to them and want to replace it with bigger business. We can see how the small businesses are bought by big developers and want to change the community.

2.Why is “Harlemites” and “the Collation” so against rezoning 125th Street?

The “Harlemites” and “the Collation” are so against rezoning 125th street because it not only changes the history of Harlem but the community as well. We can see how many small businesses are losing their business and changing what the community already grew up to. Not only that but also affects the workers and their families.

3.From what you can interpret what environmental impact would rezoning 125th Street have on the community and real estate value?

From what I can interpret about the impact of rezoning 125th street the environmental impact that it would have on the community and the real estate value is that it would change the history of Harlem and how it came about. The real estate value would make everything more expensive since it would be 19 store towers. This leads to the change in the community since it wont longer be a low class community but it would be a high class community.

4.Why would you favor rezoning 125th Street?

Personally i would not favor the rezoning of 125th street but if i had to favor i would say this because it shows development and growth. When changing 125th street it will turn into a more modern place and the community will have places that they have never had before and can be useful for them.

5.Neilie Baily, a protester, refers to the rezoning of 125th Street for the gentry class. Explain who are the gentry class.

The gentry class  will be the group of people that will be living with the mix of upper income people  which are wealthy people that will be going to Harlem.
