  • Is the height wake makes this building better?

  • Why is the word affordable in quotations?

In the pictures that are included we can see how the hotel looks on the inside and outside. We could see how the lobby’s bar looks like, the bedrooms, ballroom and dining room. Not only do we see pictures of how it is now but always how it was in the past and how it looked when it was still in construction. It explains how it had not been used since 1997 and in 2004 the Harlem Community Development Corporation requested for this change that has been made. In 2017 was when the modifications started happening and is planned to be finished by this year of 2020. This article gives us a view on how the changes that were made to this community. The Next Harlem: How a construction boom is reshaping the legendary neighborhood

  • What does all these new developments help the Harlem community?

  • Why will these buildings be beneficial to Harlem?

  • How do these buildings show Harlem’s history?

  • Did the leaders mentioned inspire them for any buildings?

In this article by Vitali Ogorodnikov he shows us how Harlem has grown over the years and the future that will come to Harlem. He starts off by talking about the past and how Harlem was. He gives examples of great leaders that came from there such as Martin Luther King Jr and Louis Armstrong. He shows pictures of how Harem looked back in 1928 and 1946. It also explains the present in which we learn how now, Harlem has many new businesses that can be used for their benefit. In addition, we learn about the recent developments that happened in Harlem such as the Circa Central Park, Hancock Place, and the Victoria Tower. These buildings can be beneficial to people in the Harlem community since they will be having a nice view of the city as well as having affordable housing in them. We also get a very vivid description of the new developments that are planned to come such as La Hermosa Church Tower, The Corn Exchange Building, and The Manhattanville Factory District. These new developments will be able to hold headquarters of what people need and of the history that there was. For example the 12 West 125th Street will be the new headquarters of the National Urban League and the city’s first Civil Rights Museum. Even though these new buildings are being made, Harlem still keeps its history to never forget their growth and the important things that have happened.

New development on the horizon in Harlem

  • Are all these buildings new developments or developments that are being made?

  • Why are all the buildings being made higher than the original ones?

  • What makes each building shown special?

  • How did each building receive their name?

  • Who allowed for all these buildings to be built?

In this article by City Realty Staff, it gives us information about the new buildings that are now in Harlem. It explains how these buildings are very expensive going from $14M and $95M. For each of the buildings the author has included the name, the designer, the developer and an image to go with it. Each building shows how big they are and what is included on the inside. If the building is still being made they give an approximate year in which it is told to be done. They include what a person will be able to accomplish in these buildings and what they can use. Pictures are included to show how the rooms would look on the inside. For example for the 152 West 140th Street building, we see a picture of the housing and how much it will mostly cause to live there. It explains to us that one of the benefits of living there would be that the residents there will have a medical office. ANother example could be the 416 Lenox Avenue, which was designed by ARC Architecture + Design Studios and Developed by TCX Development. The description shows how an affordable lottery was given for the apartments to be $2,245 a month. In which all apartments include washers and dryers.

Harlem’s New Renaissance

  • Why do people see Harlem as a place to make more bulidings?

  • Will residents have any benefit from these buildings?

  • If the community wasn’t happy with this change why did they still choose to do it?

  • Why should people with low income trust to live here?

In the “Harlem’s New Renaissance” we get a different perspective on how the new buildings in Harlem are affecting the community. We get a description of how Harlem was considered before as a neighborhood with a very high crime rate. It explains how Harlem is not the way it was before and now there is a new Harlem transforming. There are now more buildings and with those more buildings more people are coming into. The buildings can be expensive but even with it being expensive Harlem’s population now consists of all ethnicities. Even though these changes have come to be a positive outcome for Harlem there are also negatives that go with it. Many of the Harlem residents fear that because of all these new buildings they will end up losing their homes since these buildings will be more expensive. Not only that, but they also fear that they are losing the history and culture of Harlem. Wil all these new buildings will come with new regulations and things won’t be the same for the Harlem community and Harlem itself. They worry that Harlem wont have its uniqueness and is now “starting to look like downtown” which takes away the way it was before. Though there’s both positives and negatives, there are also opinions which believe that both can be taken as a positive. This is because they believe that there needs to be a balance of making Harlem better but not changing its history and culture.
